In 1849, Dostoevsky was arrested by the Tsarist police on charges of conspiracy and was later sentenced to death along with his companions. The sentence was carried out in all its gruesome detail - the prisoners dressed in white burial gown, reading the sentence, the provision of the firing squad - the last moment came a messenger on horseback with the news of Pardons : punishment was commuted to hard labor in Siberia. But it was not a sovereign grant, providentially which occurred at the last minute. Actually happened was something terrible and hideous. The tsarist government, in its sinister need to control the consciences of human beings led to the extreme limit of life, exposing them to an unbearable pain to the mind of a man. This final moment is marked by a ritual that highlights the exceptional nature and that is imprinted indelibly in the consciousness of the condemned, dilated up in agony. This represented a tremendous experience to test their psychic equilibrium: some do not and would carry this extreme tension went mad. Dostoevsky kept his mastery self - then as during the painful years of hard labor - but the memory of those moments accompanied him throughout his life, becoming the ideal center of all his reflections on life and human destiny. The day of the execution of his consciousness was shaped into a sort of extended time eternally present, crystallized in its awfulness.
